Psychoanalysis and Polyamory
55,90 € *
ggf. zzgl. Versand

This short book provides a psychoanalytic defence of polyamory as well as highlighting the problems of monogamous relationships and how they cause conflict between an analysand and the Other. Gildersleeve shows that polyamory circumvents the impasses of monogamy and argues that the value of this relationship structure is undervalued because the issue has not been reflected on or thought out thoroughly. Gildersleeve methodically uses the polyamorous literature as well as Zizek's interpretation of Lacan and a Heideggerian interpretation of Jung to achieve these goals. His aim is to show a more productive and authentic relationship structure by unconcealing what is unconscious about monogamy and its alternative polyamory. By integrating polyamory and psychoanalysis, this book offers "new discursive possibilities for the development of polyamorous identities, relationships and emotions" and poses the Lacanian question "Have you acted in conformity with your desire?".

Open Relationship

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. While "open relationship" is sometimes used as a synonym for "polyamory" or "polyamorous relationship", these terms are generally differentiated. The "open" in "open relationship" usually refers to the sexual aspect of a non-closed relationship, whereas "polyamory" refers to the extension of a relationship by allowing bonds to form (which may be sexual or otherwise) as additional long term relationships. However, there is enough overlap between the two concepts that ''open relationship'' is sometimes used as a catch-all substitute when speaking to people who may not be familiar with ''polyamory''.

Values Within Polyamory

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Polyamory, the lifestyle or choice of having multiple mutually aware and consenting loving relationships, often requires a degree of negotiation and individual choice to reach a solid basis for relationships. In negotiating the terms of polyamorous relationships, practitioners emphasize values within polyamory, as opposed to referring to predetermined rules and roles. The values discussed here are ideals often referred to in articles and discussion on the subject. As with any ideals, their adherents sometimes fall short of the mark, however, major breaches of a polyamorous relationship''s ideals are taken as seriously as such breaches would be in any other relationship.

In Praise of Open Relationships

For most people today, romantic love is tantamount to monogamy. However, the ideal of “one true love” which lasts forever has long given way to the sobering reality of serial monogamy. The simple fact that a life may comprise more than one love poses a challenge to our established conception of fidelity. Why must one love end when another one begins? In this book, the meaning of love and sexuality is reassessed. The author points out that emotion and reason, commitment and freedom do not have to be at odds. Monogamy as a relationship model is shown to rest on questionable pre-conceptions. Its impositions prove objectionable not only from a hedonistic, but also from an ethical point of view. Alternative models like “Don’t ask, don’t tell” agreements, swinging and polyamory are reviewed.
